What model rear diff oil needs to be replaced ?75W-85?75W-90or75W-140?

Man I didn't even notice that temporary knock. Car left the dealership in the same way it got in, if I hadn't watched every bit of the process I wouldn't have been able to tell they did anything. Can't believe I'm reading all this. Best of luck sorting it out, I would request another diff oil change like you said, but wouldn't let the car out of my sight and check the bottle before it went in.

Unfortunately I didn’t watch the whole process,
I presumed this to be a straightforward fluids swap without any issues!
The car arrived with no issues, I’ve never experienced any noises from the axle / clutches and I’ve always found the clutches not overly intrusive…I pick the car up after the service and the first noise was as if a large heavy cylinder had rolled inside the boot from back to front…I’ve read a knock is to be expected once the service is complete and the software updated, fine for the next few miles driving home (straight road) but then some junctions and I can hear some noises on exiting the junction, I find an open space and try a few full lock turns with gentle acceleration, loud grinding and squeals can be heard😡 I can also feel the tyres grabbing at the tarmac…I inform the dealership and make arrangements to return the car, I’m informed the car made need more time to settle so I agree to make another journey (15) miles a couple of days later then update the dealership of the outcome….Journey completed which was not as bad but still intermittent noise and tyres still grabbing at the road. Make arrangements to return the car and then the battle of words regarding the clutch fluids and software as above.

Had a bit of correspondence with the dealership today….ive asked for the clutch fluids to be replaced, they are saying not guaranteed as the issue may be with the software update at the end of the axle service….my stance is the fluids should be replaced regardless of whether the issue is software or not as I now have potential fluid contamination from noise / friction which can not be confirmed or not without the fluids being removed as it’s a sealed system!!

Don't remind me, I got blood pressure through the roof that day. Then I decided the only way for them to see it, was if I got them the printed documents straight out of MB. They still looked at me like I had come from the future, but quickly realized I had come in peace.

Jokes aside, I think the guys over at the spare parts were the problem, not the garage. The garage did everything by the book, checked WIS and proceeded as instructed. They also gave me a printout of the whole thing, which did mention the right oils.

I don't mean to justify their ignorance, but it was 2023 with all that chaos worldwide, and on top of that mine was the first M139 in the country back in 3/2020 so obviously the first at the 3 year service. I'm more surprised there are dealers with the same ignorance two years later. Car is being phased out and they'll keep screwing up the diff service.

Maybe. But there seems to be a theme running through this. It's that third service which seems to be problematic to more than one of us.

Boggles my mind one could screw up something as straightforward as this. The only thing I could understand not getting changed is the center section gear oil as there were no instructions at the time and dealers would have to take full responsibility for potential damage, even if that too was as straightforward as it could get. But that's how it works, it's protocol. I was surprised mine not only didn't hesitate to change it, they recommended it too. I was a little worried about the torque specification as there was no reference of it either and the tech would have to rely on experience, but everything went smooth and two years later it's all good. But mess up the official clutchpacks procedure, that's epic.

Perfect….much appreciated….thats what I’ve been searching for👍

For info my 3year old A45s (exceptionally low miles) went in for the 3 year service inclusive of rear axle / clutch fluid changes…car was perfect before the service, after service axle / clutches make awful grinding, clonking noises and I can feel them lock up and grab aggressively in comparison to before the service…the car is now booked to go back to the dealers, hence the interest in the actual procedure that was or was not followed correctly!

My 2023 service, which was the third service, MB failed to do the rear diff oil change. But it showed on the service work that they had not done it so I was able to follow up.

Let us know what happens from your MB visit.

Morning all,
Is anyone able to screen shot the maintenance instructions Mercedes main dealers use for the oil change on the rear differential please?
I’ve searched the forum and found mention but not the actual instructions, Google has shown some GLA instructions, but I would like to be sure I have the correct info before I discuss with my dealership.
Hope someone can assist.
Regards

Sorry for writing on an old thread! I have just gotten the code #p089700 - The transmission oil is worn, and i have found out that this code means that it's time to change the oil in the rear diff. I don't have any diagnostic tool to reset this code/ do the reset procedure after the oil change. Will i still be fine? Or does it absolutely need to be reset? Thanks!

Definitely not the rear camera opening/closing. That’s a ‘normal’ sound which I’m familiar with. The noise I’m referring to is not a normal noise. Had a fault specialist listen to the noise and he confirmed definitely not a normal sound and seems like an issue with the rear axle or the drive shaft it self. Could even be rear differential.
@e7830246 any update regarding the noise from the rear of your car?

The A45 Magna rear diff electronics is capable of a pre anticipation clutch(es) lock up in certain modes and circumstances. In VW/Audi world, this has been available since Haldex Gen 5 (roughly from 2013).

But please, let no one ever suggest that the A45s (or any other transverse engine ‘hot/hyper hatch” in this segment) is ever capable of RWD only. If they do, they would have to explain how they have managed to bend the laws of physics and overcome a mechanically linked PTO coupling in the gearbox without a transfer box 😜

Neither is it permanent AWD as you can present the car for an MoT brake test, and test it on a 2 wheel roller.

Well, my car was behaving weird in the back, spun me around unexpectadly, and gear shifts were getting jerky.

Took it MB - gearbox and rear diff oil turned to black sludge. Flushed and replaced, and car is much much smoother. Ridiculously expensive exercise but worth considering if driveline issues.

Stuck in tailbacks across the Dartford crossing morning and evening. It gave me time to feel and see the gear changes. I think it's all okay but out of interest how much is expensive?
