surprised to read all this.... had my AMG line w177 for about a month now and no problems with any scraping whatsoever through Chesterfield/Sheffield area.... i even park daily in a pot hole ridden gravel pit (cheap parking in Sheff) and have never scraped.

I have a W177 A220 and have experienced grounding the front splitter - I recently test drove an A250e and noticed that it seems to have greater ground clearance. My measurement was crude however as I didn't have a tape with me but ride was better and steering sharper too!

I’ve had mine for nearly a year. The only issues I’ve had have been very occasionally going over those full road width speed humps accidentally a little too quickly, and normally when coming off them. Other than that, I’ve had no issues day to day and including multi storey car parks. Just take it easy on obvious inclines/descents (especially those with scrape marks in the tarmac!) and it’ll be OK barring an unusual driveway ramp or such is my advice.

I'm patiently awaiting my A220 4Matic. It doesn't have the AMG line package but has the lowered suspension (by default here in Switzerland). My building's parking garage is rather steep (nearly 14 degrees in the middle) and I worry a bit that it might scrape.

Has anyone experience with a similar situation?

i have similar parking. Just be very slow at the top, when you go up or down. I catch it at the top if im not slow enough, or if someone is sitting at the back seats. Mine is amg line

Anyone know by how much the A35 is lower than the AMG Line. Iv got the figure 10mm’s in my head but i’m not sure where I heard that or if it’s right. I need to bring the car up a curb which is about 3.3inchs and A35 is roughly 4.4inchs off the ground, but i’m A220 cleared it find so I just want to know the difference

Hi everyone,

I am not from UK but I have found a lot of useful information on this forum. I am about to purchase my first Mercedes A class and I am not sure whether to go with the normal Style/Progressive line or with the AMG line, because of the ground clearance. If I choose the sport package (with the AMG line), there is a discount and I get more extras but this comes by default with lowered comfort suspension (15 mm). If I go for the Style/Progressive line I have to pay more in order to get the same extras, the design is not as beautiful as the AMG line, but I can get the normal comfort suspension.

Do you think the 15mm makes a difference when it come to daily driving? For example, I imagine that with the AMG line you cannot get on the curb, but can you do that with the normal suspension one? The roads in city where I am from are not very good and also it is very crowded so I might need to park on the curb side sometimes.

Sorry for my English and thank you so much,
Alex

I was not aware of how low the Mercedes A Class was until coming home with my A35 AMG for the first time. It bottomed out on my driveway.
Previously owned a MK3 Focus RS, which is also a low car, same profile tyres etc., but that went on my driveway no without a problem.

15mm, in my opinion will make a difference.

The W177 is a low car. I would suspect parking on curbs will be a problem regardless of which suspension you choose. You should try both out in an extensive test drive.

I can't speak for the rest of the W177 range, but the A35 is very low especially when tackling shallow speed bumps and you could easily rip off your rear diffuser, as I found out some months ago! It has a lower ground clearance than even a Lamborghini Hurracan!!! What the heck were the Mercedes engineers and designers smoking!

Hi,

Considering purchasing the AMG 200 and I am slightly concerned about the ground clearance which in the brochure is stated at only 104mm. I have a steep down facing drive which means the vehicle could potentially bottom out when backing out onto the road. Can anyone please confirm if its as low as stated and hence susceptible to speed bumps etc? The last A class was listed as 165mm so why they have taken this new model so low is beyond me. Probably why many are being damaged when being reversed off or put on the transporter?
The front is low! I can't turn left out of my drive due to the speed bumps outside the two schools that way - also if I do meet
a speed bump I have to ride the bump on one side - no good trying to straddle it! But it's something I put up with.

Hi All,

I stupidly caught the rear side of my diffuser on a high curb when trying to get out of a tight space today, which resulted in cracking the underneath and also partly pulling the side of the bumper away from its clips. Has anyone had this happen to them and if so, how much did it cost to repair? The diffuser seems to have a separate part for the rear side behind the wheel, which is what is damaged so I’m hoping I don’t need to replace the whole diffuser and bumper! I’ve attached two pics of it helps. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I can only imagine how you felt when hearing the noise that must have made. First disappointment with the A35 for me was pulling on to my drive, on the day I brought the car home for the first time. It beached on the peak where the footpath meets my driveway.

These cars are far too low for UK roads, speed humps and kerbs. Hope the damage is superficial and doesn’t cost too much to repair.

Thank you. It was horrible hearing the noise and then seeing the damage that was done :(
