I get that message about needing to download the new version but when I try to I get a message stating on Google Play stating "Your device isn't compatible with this version". I have Android 7.0 but Google Play doesn't state what version I do need. Anybody know?

That is VERY old now, mines running 10 and it works OK.
You apparently NEED to have 8 or up.
