This is something that I have never experienced before. I have a new A180 Manual and when the car is in sport mode the car will rev on its own when downshifting.

Example

- Driving in 4th gear an approaching a junction - time to slow down!
- Depress clutch, foot off accelerator and onto the brake.
- As I change into 2nd or 3rd, the car will occasionally rev noisily of its own accord. My foot is not on the accelerator at this point - the car shoots up to 3000 revs instantaneously and then backs down.

Any ideas why this is happening? It's a little embarrassing to be honest. It only happens when the car is in sport mode and no other mode - so not really sure what is going on.

Hi

I think this is the equivalent of Auto Blipping the throttle.

From "Google":

The point is to get engine RPM matched to the lower gear ratio before you release the clutch. ... You can blip the throttle rapidly to reduce the time between gears, or you can be leisurely. High-performance riders blip the throttle very quickly when downshifting between gears as they set up for a corner.
This is for Bikies, but same apply for cars.

How do you blip the throttle while downshifting a car?
Step 2: Depress the clutch pedal with your left foot. Step 3: While still on the brakes, roll your right foot to the right and onto the throttle pedal to raise (or "blip") the engine's speed (rpm) to match the expected wheel speed. Step 4: Simultaneously move the transmission shifter into the next-lower gear.

Downshift Auto-Blip. THE Auto Blip feature applies a short burst of throttle when the driver is down-shifting, which is particularly useful under braking. This raises the RPM to help provide a smooth entry into the lower gear by reducing the engine-braking effect.

Hence it happens in sports mode. This is a technique sports car drivers use to keep the rev up and hence not reduce speed when down shifting, e.g. when rounding a corner.

Check the manual and see if it mentions this?

I have the Auto A200 (Aust spec).

Hope this helps.

Wow - thanks for the responses guys. I thought there was something wrong with my car!!

Well there you go, I guess I’m not a boy/girl/neutral racer. I’ll just keep it in comfort mode thanks ?

Any more news about the manual transmission?
I’ve ordered a new A200 with manual transmission but I’m a bit worried…
Can anyone help?

I've had a new A200 petrol / manual / AMG-line / Premium for a few days. I'm very happy with the car. The gearbox is very smooth and the clutch is nice and light. It's speedy and responsive compared with my previous 140 bhp Fiesta. The dynamic settings options are Comfort, Sport & Individual (no Eco option). Comfort & Sport both work well although I like Individual on which I select Sport for Steering and leave the other sub-settings on Comfort.

I haven't experienced anything like that reported by others, it's a great manual gear shift car to drive. I selected manual because I prefer to have control over gear selection. I also read a review (can't remember where) that suggested the A200 petrol 1.3 / 163 bhp engine is better suited to the manual gearbox.

I think having the AMG-line spec is worth it for the multi-link suspension (in preference to the torsion beam on SE & Sport specs). I think that (as well as using Comfort suspension option) make the ride over poor road surfaces acceptable despite having 19" wheels.

Another view I've come across is that the A200 petrol engine is harsh, but that's not my experience. I selected petrol because I will only do 10,000 miles / year including some shortish journeys.

Hi, i got a200 sport manual. Gearbox is abit dodgy with 2nd gear nxt to the reverse. Feels wierd everytime i change to 2nd. Anyone got same 2nd gear issue?

Thanks mate, I do also prefer the manual gear, I still think the automatic gear a bit odd... I like to have the control.

I ordered the A200 AMG Line with Premium Pack, Multibeam LED lights, 18" wheels and manual transmission.

I've had manuals all my life and loved them. Love the control and also found that autos was really bad. When I went to get mine the manuals was not available so ended up with the auto box. Got to say thought I would hate it and want to get rid of it as soon as possible, but I love it, so smooth and in traffic it is lovely not to have to keep changing gears. When my car was in for a while the lease company arranged a courtesy car, a Vauxhall automatic and it was horrible.

As to better control, the paddles on the back of the steering wheel give you extra control. Want to overtake without waiting for the kickdown, which is pretty quick anyway, just flick the paddle and your in the gear. The double clutch does a great job is keeping everything smooth.

See my separate thread about the Autocar (UK 26/06/19) reviews of various A Class options. They favour A200 petrol / manual / AMG line / Executive.

I had a loaner of a180 manual for the day. Not driven a manual for over 10 years, however, it was smooth enough with nice action. Thought the pedal seemed high, Ive got long legs and felt my knee was up by steering wheel, and reverse was in an unusual place ie across n down, can’t remember ever having reverse there before :smile:

I've had an A200 manual AMG Line Premium for 3 weeks. I haven't experienced any issues and it's a perfectly smooth ride. I am happy with my choice and cant fault the car.

I have to drive auto because I use a left foot accelerator (amputee). At first I hated the idea but now I'm in love with paddle shifting that 7 speed dual clutch.
