And now Ford hit by chip shortages. This is behind a paywall so may not be readable to everyone.

We don't seem to hear from the likes of Tesla which must be seriously impacted by a chip shortage. But also every other form of manufacturing from smart phones to dishwashers.

Scale of numbers. Tesla are not remotely anywhere near a large mass market manufacturer.

Q1 2021 Tesla 180,000 cars
Q1 2021 Mercedes (passenger cars only) 591,000
Jan & Feb 2021 Toyota 1.4m
Q1 2021 Apple iPhones 57,000,000
Q1 2021 Samsung Smartphones 77,000,000

Apparently Tesla were affected, but went down another route that wasn’t as badly affected.

“In Q1, we were able to navigate through global chip supply shortage issues in part by pivoting extremely quickly to new microcontrollers, while simultaneously developing firmware for new chips made by new suppliers.”

This is interesting, worldwide sales by brand

I'm guessing this is also why new games consoles are in short supply such as the PS5.

Semiconductor shortage going to be lasting well into 2022., causing delays.

Glad to see others are also subscribing to the FT, even if it's through work. I saw the story on its site last night and it seems to be going from bad to worse.
