Taking delivery of my preowned A200D next month. It’s build in 9/2019 I can see.
When the dealer goes owner it and details it for the sale, I’m having them install some parts that needs coding.

When they have the computer hooked up I was thinking about asking them to make sure it has the most current update. What is this called and how do I check what version is has? I heard someone talk about something called FU2 - is that it? And is this the update that brings the store to the MBUX display? So if I have the store I known for sure it’s the most current?

What about maps - do they just update by it self over air or is that also a dealer thing?

thank you

FU2/063 is the current MBUX software version.

If you are buying from a MB dealer I would be inclined to ask them to make sure all the software and maps are up to date before you collect the car, in other words give them the problem 🤣

You say you are having parts fitted that require coding, just being nosiy what parts are these?

The most recent that people are speaking about here is the FU2 update for MBUX. But rumors is that they are releasing the FU3 very soon (people have been writing on this forum from march that it is coming). So if you have luck on your side, maybe it´s been released when you talk to them..

The maps will update themselfs over air but it takes a while, easier to go online and download them to an USB-stick and connect to the car.

But ask them to update everything, it takes a couple of hours so dial them before and ask them to do it.

My dealer did not update the MBUX system when I had it on service (from standard version to FU2), even thou I asked for it. But I felt some problems with the transmission so I asked them again and talked directly to the people in the workshop and they updated both the MBUX and also the ECU and some other things that was on an old firmware.

Thank you so much for the answers.

I’ll call them a few days before collection and ask to make sure both the entertainment system (MBUX?) and ECU are updated prior to collection.

When did FU2 come out - cause if the car was build and registered first time 12/2019 then it might already have it all?

I’m just having the OEM puddle logo lights installed. They require a quick coding of the door control panels to make sure enough power is supplied. So nothing big.
Afterwards it will go to an independent MB specialist to have Distronic Plus and maybe a Panamericana grill installed. (MB can’t compete with that price wise - actually they claim it’s more or less not possible - while the other workshop does it in a few hours with all OEM parts)

FU2/063 is the current MBUX software version.
It is the current API version, but there are still smaller Updates within that version.

If the Me Shop Icon is visible and you can find the software version in the settings menu you are on FU2.

The headunit and speedometer can run on different versions. (Example: headunit is on FU2, but speedometer still on an older version) I would ask the dealer to also update the speedometer to be sure.

Here is my sum up, posted on a german forum earlier. And a picture to show the difference between different speedometer versions.

This way you can determine the version relatively precisely:

Pre-Fresh Up 1, features:
  • No "online music"/ tidal.
  • No possibility to order DAB or smartphone integration via the Me Store on the Internet.
  • No OTA updates of the maps.
  • The AR camera display is in the main display on the left side.
Fresh Up 1, Features:
  • Online music/tidal unlocked.
  • DAB and smartphone integration can be ordered through the Me Store.
  • The AR camera display is in the main display on the right side.
  • Big change in menu design > The menu items are in "tile" design.
Fresh Up 2, features:
  • Store App in the main menu.
  • The possibility to read out the current software version under Settings > System > System Info
Of course there are also many minor differences between the versions, and the appearance of the menus has changed completely.

With the help of these features or missing features you can determine quite clearly which MBUX version is roughly on it. The instrument cluster is independent of this, the "earlier" models don't seem to have a progressive tacho design, even though there are later updates of both instrument cluster and MBUX.

Different speedometer version: EQC (Newer) vs A-Class (Older)

Wow - that’s a bit more complicated. I know I can just ask them to “update everything” after all they seem extremely competent.

BUT if I want to actually let them know; which exact updates should I ask them to do, to be sure they get the right message (is called speedometer update for example?) and do they really last hours?
I just don’t want to come across as a “know it all” to the technician and give a lot of wrong info - or on the other hand just ask “for an update” and then just have the guy do a MBUX of gearbox update and not really see what else is available. Thank you

Btw: Thank you so much posting guides like this online. It’s stuff like this that will be google for many years to come. The MB community needs this. Coming from VAG cars the online community and aftermarket crowd is very limited. What is the best source of knowledge? Motortalk.de? They seem very active.

I guess it really depends on the dealer. They can plug the car into their diagnostics and see what can/needs to be updated, and I would guess there are some dealers who won't mess with an update if it is not marked as necessary by Daimler.

The big updates do take hours. I had the Update from Fresh Up 1 to 2 and it took around 6 hours.

The most important one is the ECU and MBUX headunit. The speedometer is a strange thing, as most dealers do not seem to want to update it. (I guess its more work) But there is not much benefit to it either, as it is really just some minor details in the design and no real new features.

Note also: There is some earlier model years which are already kinda outdated: They are missing the progressive Style of the speedometer, and also can't open/close the windows via app/web. I have not heared of anyone updating an older model to show the progressive Style.

Motortalk seems the most active.

Unfortunately Mercedes is not very transparent with MBUX yet, and most information is just owner experiences. They are slowly adapting by now having "MBUX Experts" at dealers, but I guess most will just stare at you blank if you begin to talk about Fresh Ups and other details... 😁

I should just stick with asking them to make sure you have FU2/063 and the latest maps loaded v13.2 otherwise you might confuse them.

They may seem very competent but there will be few who know as much as #Maxim about the various software versions and in any case their competence may just be an illusion 😂

Exactly- and if I go to the girl at the counter- that’s feeding me newly baked buttery croissants and fresh espresso and ask her for “FU2/063 and maps v.13.2) I’ll be banned for the dealership for sounding like R2D2 🤣I’ll figure it out.
    Thanks for being so helpful

The term you're looking for is "Fresh Update version 2"
It is indeed but when I mentioned that to the dealer they had no idea what I was taking about, mind you they didn't understand FU2/063 either 🙄

On reflection I should just ask for everything to be updated but check that they have done it when you pick the car up but leave it with them if they haven't.

I did the first bit & they promised to do the update but they still didn't do the update 😭
