Exhaust Mods/Upgrades

Currently exploring options to make the exhaust louder. On the lookout for any exhausts being released or custom mods people are thinking of.

iPE have released an exhaust which will be ready in 4 weeks. They have quoted £2950 for the exhaust and £500 for shipping and fitting.

I am thinking of doing just a back box delete for now but unsure if this would affect the warranty in any way. I imagine it will only affect the warranty on the exhaust but not on the engine.

Does anyone have any pictures of the underneath of the car? How many resonators the car has or what the piping looks like?

I would say there is a good chance the EML will stay off, but MG do not guarantee this.

I would imagine that any modification to the exhaust may void the warranty on the exhaust only, unless the dealer could argue that the exhaust caused the fault complained of.

I guess it depends on the dealer and what warranty work is involved.

Thanks @joni

Going to order the DP ... how much was it? and how long did it take to arrive?

I spoke to MG again a week back and they mentioned they don't know if the EML will come on because of my custom catback exhaust. Would that make a difference?
It may do. When I spoke to MG they said they try to match the pressure in the exhaust to the OEM. So if you have changed the back box this may well have an effect.

DP and backbox will be crazy loud...

It's a 200 CPS cat that comes with the FI downpipes. The entire system is from FI . Its a friends car and so far no error lights since the install a few months ago. So this system is safe to install without a remap at least for cars that don't come with the GPF.

Spoke to a friend who works in the garage at a mercedes dealership. He spoke to the warranty person who said that replacing your cat for a sports cat doesn’t void your warranty. If your eml comes on however, you will need to pay for the diagnosis. Not sure if its a different story for the OPF.

So the Cat and GPF are both part of the Downpipe, you can't remove one without the other.

Your friend is correct, removing them would only invalidate your warranty on those specific parts. However if something else was damaged because of the modification then this would also not be covered. This is unlikely to be an issue in this case though as they only thing downstream is the exhaust.

In regards to the EML, I don't think Mercedes would be able to do anything about that as it would be correctly reporting what the car would see as a fault with the vehicle emissions. As far as I know Mercedes would not code the light out even if they had the ability to do so.

So modifying your downpipe doesn’t invalidate the warranty on your car, just anything that goes wrong due to the modification won’t be covered under the warranty. But if you replace the downpipe and the EML comes on, and decide to remap, that will invalidate warranty? What happens if you just leave the EML on?

I’ve gone ahead with my order of the MGmotorsports sports cat DP as they are confident it won’t cause an EML!

It’s all to do with cause and effect.

so, for example, if you replace your down pipe, and say that down pipe changes the backpressure on the system, which in turn causes the turbo to fail, you won’t get the turbo replaced under warranty as it’s failure was caused by something you changed linked to it.

Ah I see. What is the likelihood of any issues from replacing a downpipe with a 100cpsi sports cat and removing the OPF? I’ve always heard replacing the downpipe is good for the car ... better flow for exhaust gases?

No, neither would invalidate the warranty as whole. As such, remapping would invalidate the warranty on the engine and transmission etc.

Depends, most likely the car will drive fine with the EML on. In some cases it may go into limp mode.

It would of course fail an MOT though.
Ok i see how it works now.

MG sent my dp with DHL a few weeks back but it got returned due to the new corona virus strain in UK. Waited for a bit but DHL weren’t delivering parcels to UK still. Paid an extra £50 to get it shipped by air and just received this ... an extra £200 -.-

Also an update. The Check Engine light appeared yesterday. Car drives fine but no longer pops and bangs.

MGmotorsports said i can “reset this errror and there is a high chance the ecu will adapt and wont show the error again. Also if the error shows again then 2nd oxygen sensor must be readjusted to the existing conditions - it is still not a major tweak and should not void the warranty”.

Thoughts? I’ve ordered this from Amazon to read and clear the fault. Should arrive today. If I clear the fault myself, will merc know or does it affect warranty?

I use an app on my phone called car scanner it’s great it may work with the obdu dongle you have ordered, you can use it for free but it’s only about £5 to buy and the guy updates it all the time it’s really useful and works with just about everything. Resetting fault codes shouldn’t cause you any issues with warranty, let us know what you find. The car sounds absolutely wicked, I think I need a down pipe 🤘

I cleared the fault on Fri 22nd. Car ran as normal however the engine light came back on Wednesday 27th. When I cleared it again yesterday this is what it showed:

7327

7328

Will it be a problem if I keep clearing the faults every time they come on? Also what is EGR system? This time the Oxygen Sensor Heater also failed.

Ah do you have a downpipe installed too? Joni got back to me on a PM. He said:

"My EML. has come back on a couple of times since but then went off by itself. My fault was 02 sensor / lean fuel mix, which I presume is due to more air with the downpipes. When this occurred the pops and bangs went. I think the ECU stops the pops and bang when it thinks the fuel air mix is not at the standard level. Pops and bangs came back when I cleared the stored error codes from the ECU.

I have never had the catalyst error or the EGR system - (is that the GPF?) The 02 sensor fault I believe is due to more air in the down pipe.

The second time it happened the EML went of by itself I cleared the codes and the pops and bags came back, but to be honest I can't be asked doing this and need a more perm solution.

I think I will install my chip tune box to see whether this resolves the issue as the box will tell the ECU that the air and fuel etc are all standard levels."

So, lets clear a few things up:

1. A45S does not have an EGR.
2. Clearing DTCs won't damage your vehicle.
3. P2271 is the Lambda sensor on the outgoing side of the cat reporting that there is not enough oxygen present. This could be caused by a faulty sensor. It would also happen if the cat was not filtering as well as expected. I would say it is much more likely that the 100 cell you have had fitted simply isn't doing a good enough job at filtering the emissions.
4. A tuning box will not solve this issue unless it specifically interferes with the sensor causing your EML. You would likely need a bespoke unit for this.
5. As above, all historic fault codes are stored on the vehicle and an ELM327 cannot clear them.

There are 3 possible solutions to this issue:

1. Your downstream Lambda sensor has failed, could have been damaged when it was installed in your new downpipe. Replace this and the car will no longer show an EML (unlikely).
2. Have this sensor mapped out.
3. Try MIL cheaters to reduce the sensor's reading.
