The recall is a new engine ECU map to reduce NOx emissions in Euro5 and Euro6 engines.

You have engine power, efficiency, and emissions, Unfortunately, you don't get to choose all 3.

At the combustion temperatures and pressures that an engine runs for max efficiency, you also get lots of NOx being formed. If you want to reduce NOx, you have to reduce temperatures, pressures, efficiency etc.

One way of lowering combustion temperatures is EGR, unfortunately as the combustion temperature drops, so does the power, and the fuel economy.</span>

You only have to see the problem VW have at the moment post "fix" with owners cars, EGR valves, Limp Mode, Power, fuel economy etc. (google "VW Diesel EGR")
