Multi-link or Torsion Beam

Hi all, just a quick one.

I'm in the market for a used petrol W177 and was wondering what year/model I should go for that will mean I get the multi-link rear suspension (U55). I'm not interested in the true AMG or a250, just anything below those that will not be torsion beam.

My understanding is if I go for any amg-line model before 2020 July it will have it? Does anyone know how I can check when shopping around?

Lastly, does anyone know if there is any real difference between the two?

It seems despite previous information, those of us with the smaller engines are not going to get multi-link rear suspension, even in AMG-line trim.

Previous brochures always had multi-link down for all cars with AMG-line trim. This was later changed to all except the A180 diesel. Now it excludes many of the smaller engines.

Disappointed!

Details from the Jan 2019 brochure:

Rear axle (Hatchback) – Torsion Beam
All SE, Sport model lines and AMG Line: A 180 d (code OM608), A 180 and A 200 (code M282)

Rear axle (Hatchback) – Multi-Link
Applicable only on A 200 d and A 220 d (code OM654) and A 220 4MATIC, A 250 and Mercedes-AMG A35 4MATIC (code M260)

Rear axle (Saloon) – Torsion Beam
All Sport model lines and AMG Line: A 180 d (code OM608) and A 200 (code M282)

Rear axle (Saloon) – Multi-Link
Applicable only on A 220 4MATIC and A 250 (code M260)

How can you confirm if your car has it or not besides just seeing it listed on the build sheet.

My build sheet says multi-link rear axle (A180 amg petrol)...but is there any way I could confirm it's there or not

This is not good. I have looked on the November factory build price list and the suspension type is not specified, yet it seems to be specified for the first time on the latest January production price list as Torsion Beam for the AMG A200 model which I was considering. Also no mention of whats fitted on the A220 none 4matic model. It would appear that any cars ordered before January 2019 build could come with either Torsion Beam or Multi-link rear rear axle suspension. This is very poor on a AMG spec A class given a VW Golf, Audi A3 and even a Ford Focus provide multi link on their premium models. If this am error in the price list or is multi link going to become and option as part of a suspension package on the A200 AMG models and below?

.... its not an AMG spec........ its an AMG line.... like S Line, or ST line, or M sport... its a trim level. the only AMG spec are the A45 & A35 when that comes out.

They were, but then what is "U55 Multi link axle" in my factory build sheet? Also there's another user above with an A200 that says his car came with multi rear axle.

How is one even able to confirm for sure what their car has?

Maybe people should check their factory confirmation sheet and see if they have option:

"U55 - Multi link axle"

I think this is the multi link suspension option, or it's referring to something completely different

I think part of the problem is that Mercedes don't seem to know!

The brochure says one thing, the configurator another. The latest brochure is different from the October one, which is different from the July one. The reviews are inconsistent. The feedback from owners says yes on amg line, but only a handful have commented.

Spending all that money without a definite answer is really what’s bugging me.

Dealer and Mercedes have confirmed that any A200 AMG Line or lower engine derivative in Production as of January 2019 will now have Torsion Beam rear axle suspension and not multi link. So if anyone wants to buy one with Multi link its likely to have to come from current dealer stock or used. So much for waiting for a April delivery with the hope a few more options may come along, more like they are taking away a few.

That's interesting. Mine is due at the dealers Feb 12 so I'm assuming a late 2018 build. I have no way of knowing as its a lease and I have no information except when it is due at the "dealer" who-ever that might be.

How long does it usually take from build to delivery?

This is what an Australian vehicle review website thinks of the Torsion Beam setup on the new A class for the A200. They too orginal received an A200 to review with Multi link. I guess Mercedes waited for a good review with the expensive rear axle setup and then pulled a fast one by slowly switching to Torsion Beam.
https://www.caradvice.com.au/694632/2019-mercedes-benz-a200-review-2/

"The mechanicals below the boot area provide a surprise for a luxury car: a semi-independent, torsion-beam rear suspension. It’s unexpected because while this set-up typically brings advantages in cost and space efficiency, chassis engineers tend to favour a fully independent multi-link or double-wishbone rear suspension to achieve optimum ride and handling.

There are plenty of models that ride well with a torsion-rear set-up – including the new Renault Megane RS on its base Sport chassis – though the Mercedes can’t match the compliant, easygoing comfort of the French hot hatch or multi-link-suspended hatches such as the Volkswagen Golf and Toyota Corolla. The A200’s suspension is easily irritated, with surface irregularities regularly intruding into the cabin."

I would say 10-12 weeks is the norm from point of order so hard to say that it wont be a January production build. If your order form says U55 - Multi-link axle and its Torsion Beam when it arrives then you can reject it,

#21 ·
Thanks. I ordered 12th September, so that’s 5 months! I don’t have an order form as it’s lease, just the lease agreement which doesn’t go in to that much detail.

can not get a straight answer from Mercedes customer service if the A200 AMG line will get torsion beam rear axle suspension from January production build onwards! Its in the brochure price list for January but dealers are still telling me they are placing build slots into February with Multi-link U55. Does a build slot setup for February 2019 but placed in December 2018 mean the vehicle will come with multi link U55 because it was ordered on the December build price list when U55 multi link was still confirmed?

Guys had this reassurance about the Multi link axle specification from Mercedes and they insist the e brochure will be updated to reflect this fact as it is currently incorrect.

Thank you for your email and your patience whilst I have been looking into this for you.

I have received confirmation from our product team today that all AMG line A-Class Hatchback and Saloon will get a Multi-Link axle, with the exception of the A180d AMG line which will get torsion beam.

All sport and SE models will receive torsion beam.

I hope this clarifies everything for you.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

Kind regards,

You are welcome.

I'm considering a A200 AMG line Premium for March/April delivery but waiting as long as possible to see if a night pack or black chrome trim option will be released sooner rather than later. Not holding my breath though.

Just glad the A class in this spec wont be getting Torsion beam.

Hello, I am new to the forum and am considering buying a slightly used Mercedes A220 AMG Line W177 12/2018, it is a front-wheel drive, but as far as I understand the A250 has independent rear suspension, but the lesser models get a torsion beam, however, I didn't see anyone mentioning the A220 (hatchback, none 4 Matic). It would be greatly appreciated if someone could help me out with this one as I can't find any information online and it would have a big effect on which model I go for, thanks.

P.S. I have already posted this same question in the suspension thread, but I really do need a quick answer since I will acquire an A220 or A250 depending on the answer to this question within the next fiew days.

According to "Parkers car reviews":-
How comfortable your A-Class is depends upon the version you go for. AMG Line versions come with a sophisticated rear suspension set-up, while cheaper SE and Sport versions have a compromised cost-saving format that hinders ride quality. In reality this is balanced out by SE and Sport versions featuring 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels respectively, with more rubber separating passengers from the road compared with the 18-inch ones on the AMG Line cars. As a result, you can expect AMG Line models to prove firmer but quicker to settle over scarred roads, while SE and Sport models are softer but less able to smooth away bumpy surfaces.

My May/June 2019 build A220 AMG Line W177 has build code U55 "Multi-Link Axle".

Hi,
Yes, that's all right what was written.
The AMG version has a multi-link rear suspension
The key is in the difference between multi-link and torsion beam rear suspension setups. Multi-link setups allow independent movements of the wheels on either side, while torsion beam ties the wheels together to a certain degree. ... With a torsion beam, both wheels will rise and drop almost simultaneously.
But at the same time, the 4matic version is unrivaled
I also have A220 4Matic and I write it with full conviction.
Traction to the ground, exit from the corner, even the starting speed has undeniable advantages in front of the front drive only.
Mercedes is constantly changing the specification.
Mine is from 2019 UK where compared to 2018 it was no longer in the A250 4Matic offer but only the A220 4Matic remained. Today in 2020, A220 4Matic was discontinued in the UK <
and the specification looks different.
If it wasn't for the steering wheel I would buy a new A250 4matic in Europe .

Thank you all on your help, the car should arrive next week at some time it's an A220 AMG Line in Mountain gray in what seems a quite nice spec: MBUX, Ambient lighting, big screens (both), Heads up display, Burmester surround sound, Led high-performance lights, etc... with a little over 12K miles.
