The car was due to be serviced tomorrow at the dealer close to where we live. It's currently at a dealer closer to where it broke down. They have rebooked the service for the 9/Nov, so I'm hopeful that's an indication of how long they think it'll take. We will see!

Got the call on Friday that they completed the works, but need to keep the car so that they check cold-starting behaviour. They seem to be very careful, which to me is a good sign. If all checks on Monday, that would mean the works would take about 6 days to complete.

Well well guys and gals - just spent an hour trawling through this amazing thread as I wanted to see if my A35 issues were just bad luck. But no. Have a March 2021 A35 with 22,000 miles when that little yellow light came on, then flashing then chugging with no power. Went in to a MB garage two weeks ago and now awaiting parts. I will keep you all updated. The worry for me is this the start of the problems but appreciate that anyone having had it fixed does not appear to happen again. Hopefully will be the same for me but just wanting to add to the growing list in the hope that someone somewhere might pay attention or at least help someone who is having out of warranty issues.

Finally, got the car back yesterday!! Power has been restored. No errors on the ECU unit either.

Service manager was away so haven't yet gotten the full breakdown of what was replaced. But the cylinder and valve cover are new, the valve cover having a 05/22 date etched onto it.
Nice to hear that. You must be feeling good ...
How long it took from the day it had problem to yesterday?

From the day I tried to have them look at it took about a couple of months. But most of the time was just waiting for the appointment time to come up. The diagnosis was done on a single day and were very quick to conclude it was the cylinder head. It took them less than a week to source the parts (probably just a lucky coincidence), and then 6 days for the actual repair.

Update - fault occurred 21 October, cylinder head replaced and completed 11 November. 3 weeks in total. Have copy invoice detailing work carried out over 3 pages. A few issues along the way but had a nice hire car and they are repatriating my vehicle 120miles by lorry this Monday coming. I am interested in seeing if I can get an extension to my warranty with such intrusive work done on a engine only 18 months. I guess you would hope that it will all be fine but I am concerned that another fault related may occur down the road. I will let you know how I get on unless other have tried?

Any new parts fitted will come with their own 2 year warranty. So if they replaced the cylinder head itself, that will carry a 2 year warranty.

They won’t extend the whole vehicle warranty, no.

Thanks Veeeight
Another quandary I am in - the car is due a service in two weeks but with a full oil change, sparks replaced not sure I will get full value for the service as I do pay monthly. Wonder whether there is any leverage on having the service done in a few months without incurring the wrath of MB - will call MB and find out but guess a service is due when a service is due

The service maybe due but you can delay it to some extent. I have delayed mine with a SP for a few weeks, in the past. But the service includes a lot more than just oil and spark plugs. I'm not sure when the A35 rear axel oil change is due for instance. For the A45s I think we pinned down it is after three years.

Hi, I thought this was a relevant thread for me to post on.. A35 2021 6k miles
Mrs started the car this morning and I could hear it misfiring. Before I could get her attention she had already driven off and I could still hear it misfiring.
When she returned home the car was running as normal but she said she saw the EML on when she drove off (didn’t think to stop 🙈)

surely this can’t be signs of cylinder head issues at this low mileage?
I will contact Mercedes but just wanted to hear anyone’s thoughts.

many thanks

Hi Josh - Yeah agree that is very low mileage. I came on this thread and found all the chats super helpful and put me in a strong position when talking with MB about it.

My yellow engine management light was on constant but it got really bad when is started flashing and I could feel a massive lack of power. It was only when a MB technician came out that he diagnosed the fault as compression in a cylinder and arranged for car to be towed in. My advice would be if it comes on again then call RAC/MB and request a technician and he will diagnose - you could book into a MB garage but I had to wait three weeks for an appointment and by then it went really bad and had no choice.

For me, all in all was an OK experience if you're under warranty. But the bill was £4k plus hirer car for 3 weeks. Mine is back now and all ok (fingers crossed).

Thanks to everyone on thread though - great forum

I did contact MB and have booked a diagnostics check but I have to wait 5 weeks! I was debating just contacting for a technician to come out but was under the impression they would only attend if the car was completely non driveable.
I questioned the guy on the phone at MB as to whether it was a good idea to drive the car over for the diagnostics check and he said as long as it’s not a red EML then it can be driven to the garage.
Started the car again this morning and ran ok to the shops and back with no warning lights.

has anyone experienced intermittent warning lights or is it just a case of once it’s on it has stayed on?

also, when they do the diagnostics check will there be a history of when the EML was on?

Yes, all errors are logged in the car, irrespective of whether they are current or not. They can see the frequency of errors, time of first and last occurrence etc.

If you have a permanent yellow light best thing to do is to call Mobilo with the SOS button. They will just come to diagnose the fault. They will likely ask you to tow the car to the dealership for a full appraisal (the protocol requires that they do a compression test to conclude that you need a new cylinder head). That is what I ended up doing.

Thanks for this,

If the light comes on again then I think this is what I will do, especially as it can’t be looked at for 5 weeks.
Luckily the car isn’t needed daily but don’t want it to be just sat waiting to go to MB!

The only thing I’m worried about is not loving the car as much if it does need any major work doing.
When I’ve had other cars that needed major work, it never felt the same after!

Yes mine is back and I am defo overthinking what it feels like to drive now.
As for the EML mine was intermittent. It would come on then go off after I restarted. When it was solid yellow it didn't affect performance that I could tell (that happened about 3 times) - when it flashed that coincided with performance and compression issues. That happened again about three times and the weekend it went in I could drive more than a couple of miles without it flashing. But like you I had booked it in and was waiting for my appointment. But that's when I called MB breakdown and they came out and took it in. I was also lucky that the car was close to an AMG franchise. Not sure if that makes a difference but it did make me feel better
