I'm looking at getting into an A35. Not so sure now! Am I safe if I buy a 2022 or newer car? I'm looking at buying from my local MB dealer. I asked them if I would get a 2 year warranty as it's an AMG car but they've said only the 1 year. Which contradicts a lot of what I've been told elsewhere. I'd be stupid to buy this car without a decent warranty but I'm hoping that if I stretch to a model later than 2021 that they have this issue resolved. Disgraceful that they've left so many customers high and dry with this issue.
We have seen no engine problem reports on the FL A35, which was from late 2022 as a 2023 model year.

Hey everyone

I was planning on buying a 2019 a250 (30,000 miles) literally tomorrow when I came across this thread. My question is, Is there anything I can do to check whether the car I'm looking at will have the faulty part prior to buying it?

If there's no way of knowing do people reckon its worth purchasing an extended warranty at ÂŁ657 especially since the car is not from a MB approved dealer so only comes with a three month warranty, or do I just get a different car.

Will be disappointed if the latter is the case as have honestly had my heart set on the a250 since I test drove it.

Thanks in advance.

Definitely look for an extended warranty, one which covers valves, valve guides, cylinder heads

You can’t tell. There is no part number to look out for. I’m sure you can pay for the warranty you have mentioned in monthly instalments.

Hi all,
I'm new to the Mercedes A Class community but have a little story for you all.
I recently purchased a 6 month old AMG A35 from a main dealer. Had a few months and have loved it up until last weekend when engine light came on. Called Merc who sent out technician. Diagnosed coil pack and fitted new. Next day having driven a few miles without issue engine light came back on and same 3 cylinder rough running engine was back. Car went in to main dealer who advised a valve problem (no further info on this yet) New head now being fitted. Anyone else had this issue?
Hi I’m also new to this channel also.
I also had problems with my 2020 A35.
I suffered misfiring 2 weeks ago and got the car straight to my local independent garage.
However not a Mercedes dealer as I needed somewhere local as my engine management light came on.
The car was loosing power and shuddering which was a horrible experience and very unsettling at the time.
However the garage fixed the problem as it was 2 cylinders and some other issues with the engine.
This cost me around ÂŁ1000 pounds however 2 weeks later I had the same issue, so back to the garage I went and the car engine has had a full strip down which you can imagine the Labour charges.
The diagnosis is burnt valves and a warped cylinder head and gasket.
The whole engine is in bits and still at my local garage.
I have been told that I have a faulty cylinder head in which I need a whole new replacement which will cost thousands.
This is a manufacturing issue which Mercedes don’t want to know or help customers with this faulty cylinder head.

I phoned Mercedes and a helpline and I was told in so many words that there is no warranty left as my car is 5 years old.
I was upset as I insisted this was a faulty cylinder head and explained that my car is well preserved and certainly well maintained with just 34000 miles on the clock.
With so many owners of an A35 who have suffered why isn’t there a recall on this major cylinder head failure??

Finally I told a staff member from Mercedes why don’t you go online and see the streams of customers and complaints of this serious .
Unfortunately I was just told that I quote we sell thousands of cars a week and that there will be some cars out there with problems.

in other words she couldn’t give a toss as I’m left with a massive bill.

The MB garage need to contact MB or you do. If your car is fully MB serviced, the garage will usually do so. This is a known fault and even if you are not fully MB serviced you should contact the UK MB ceo's office mbceooffice@daimler.com

Hey, new to the forum as I’ve been looking at getting a used A35 and learned a lot from here already while I’ve been doing my research.

I wondered if anyone here and based in the UK has any experience of third party warranty companies covering the cylinder head issues? I’m looking at a 2019 premium plus with aero kit, test drove it and fell in love, but the issue is really holding me back from pulling the trigger. The one I’m looking at doesn’t have a full MB SH and is from and independent dealer. Obviously they are massively playing it down to get the sale, but I have my reservations. I’ve been looking at taking out a third party warranty to go with the car as a possible cost effective way of having some peace of mind. The dealer can sell me one, but it’s massively over priced compared to what else is out there on comparison sites, but I’m also skeptical that they will have so many get out clauses that if it happened they’d find a way to wriggle out of it.

Obviously MB warranty is also an option, but it’s pretty steep compared to all the other options and I can only get a 12 month quote.

I have to be honest and say this is new territory for me, I have never used any of these warranty companies that are around and no idea if they are just a waste of money. I hate the process of buying cars to the point that I have stuck with an S2000 as a daily drive for the past 13 years. I love it, but I’m ready for something more modern as a daily. After testing the A35 I have my heart set on it but this issue is a real worry. If it didn’t exist I literally would have bought one today.

Cheers in advance for any tips anyone can offer

Can you not check if the car has had the replacement done? The new cylinder head on mine has a date etched on it. Should be visible if you pull the plastic cover off.

I was under the impression that a visual check wouldn’t identify it. Anyway, I bought the car. Late 2019 premium plus in white with aero. Had a blast in it the last couple of days.

Have you looked under plastic cover?
