Prospective A45 owner here... my shortlist is one PFL and one FL.

I know you only ever hear about things going wrong on forums but it seems like this gearbox problem is really something to be concerned about. Before reading around (and registering here) today I'd almost decided to stretch my budget and get the FL but now I'm really not so sure.

Although the gearbox issue was a hassle for me I'm still happy with the car. It's a very different beast to the 370Z Nismo I was in before. Not as much character and doesnt turn as many heads, but a better car in pretty much every way.

If you find you have the gearbox issue and the car is still under warranty MB should replace the box You might need to be a bit patient and persistent as a lot of dealerships seem (or claim to be) ignorant of the problem. Once my car was booked in it was back in a week and has run fine since.Edited by: sipar69

having owned both go for FL version, my gearbox fault was noticed because i parked on a decline overnight, that is the only time the crunch was noticeable, however the gearbox needed changing, I bet there are hundreds with fault but due to cold start decline have not noticed

Well, the decision was made for me: I was due to test drive the FL this weekend (I test drove the PFL last weekend) but the dealer called me to say the car was in the workshop for some "warranty work" and probably wouldn't be ready for about ten days.

So I've put my money down for the PFL.

Nice one, you won't regret it, PFL is a really good car and has better headlights too ‘Edited by: Glen

Been very impressed with the pre-facelift headlights - on high beam the penetration with 'half-moon' effect covering the full width of the road and more, makes driving along my favourite twisties a real joy.

Well two years into ownership and I have just had my gearbox replaced. I figured I would wait to ensure Mercedes really had fixed the issue and I can say it is a whole lot better than the old box. It shifts more cleanly when warm, doesn't jerk when going from park, and hopefully will not crunch when the cooler weather comes round.

If it helps anyone else, I used Mercedes in Ascot and they couldn't have been better, and I didn't have to argue for a new box instead of a rebuild. Maybe this is the Mercedes line now?

Interesting to catch up on the progress here. After 2 years battling (and far too many posts on this thread!) We have been offered about £3.5k contribution from the various arms of the MB Universe and a slightly inflated trade-in price for our immaculate 15 plate with the unsolved crunch. We will therefore be collecting our 18 plate A45 with only 60 miles on Saturday and I really cant wait.

If the gearbox starts to crunch i'll completely lose my sh!t though! Its going straight back!

Fingers crossed its a good un! They are truly fantastic cars which other than this issue are hard to fault in any significant way.

Hi ive recently purchased a 2016 a45 with 79k miles getting the thud when slowing down plus the crunch on the 2nd attempt going from N to R or D did anyone just have parts replaced rather than a new box because mines clearly out of warranty MB are saying it’s a output shaft which only took them a hour to diagnose it, which is totalling £5000 again there claiming to have never heard anything about this issue 🤦‍♀️ but all I seem to read about is the dreaded crunch?

They are still paying though?

I didn’t read it as M-B were paying 🤷‍♂️
It sounded as though there is separate warranty. But either way keep us posted.
