have you suffered

Hi Guys,
After having NO issues at all with the gearbox, I had a funny one today, I normally reverse the car onto the drive and always choose D to set off in the morning...

But for the first time that I canimagine I didn't do that and drove on the drive forward so had to Choose R and this morning I gota large Crunch from the gearbox, exactly the same as in the videos on this thread....

Can anyone confirm that they only got the crunch if choosing Reverse first and not Drive... Seems bloody odd.... Worried now that now its done it for the first time, that's it, buggered no matter what.!

Thanks

Brett

Simple answer. Exactly the issue I have. It has been back once. The dealer acknowledges the issue and has used software to tweak the box (not sure how best to explain what they claim to have done) but the issue continues. I am now asked to leave the car with them for a couple of weeks so they can try and record the noise made given that it does not make the noise every time. The noise is a gear crunch!!!
I am FAR from happy, which both the dealer and Mercedes are aware of. I filed a CAC yesterday on the Mercedes site. I would encourage anyone who has this issue to complete the CAC form too (customer complaint). Hopefully the volume of complaints will force a wholesale remediation of the problem rather than the apparent current piece meal approach. Better a recall to remedy the problem for all of us so all our FL A45 AMGs are what they should be than horrific depreciation because the 2nd hand market won't touch them because they won't know whether they'll be getting a good 'un.
Very sad because otherwise it is a GREAT car!!!

I mean i get a slight clunk when cold going from Park into Reverse etc. but it's not exactly a grinding and doesn't seem to cause any issues with the car. You just hear it and feel a nudge, It happened on my Pre-FL as well so assume that it's normal on the FL.

I also had a '05 V8 Vantage which did the same when using the electronic selector, is this not what some people are thinking it is rather than the obvious grinding noise highlighted before?

Mine had the clunk and still does which i believe is normal but the grinding noise is not. Mine was some sort of valve = new gearbox.
Mine would only do it when cold and normally when put in reverse or drive for the second time

Always had a clunk, in fact I was glad of the clunk as it meant I never got the grind... But selecting R this morning instead of D gave that horrible sounds like a bag of spanners being dragged across a collection of metal files.....
Its on the drive as normal, I will try it out in the morning...

Thanks

Not sure what 'clunk' means...

I'll explain it this way - when starting the car in parking lot, half of the people turned their heads. Normal.

Upon selecting reverse... the rest turned their heads too.

It was that loud. Grind is probably better word.

It sounds like that as the engine is cold it is revving higher as they do, and when selecting a gear the clunk or grind, 2 different sounds, is a gear trying to mesh with with another gear, but one is running faster then the other, so if you mesh it perfect it still clunks as it bangs into place, if they do not mesh in perfect timing they rub across the top, or side and and you get the grinding sound probably followed by a clunk unless you have slowed the gear down sufficiently.
Fact is timing is out on the gear speed and no doubt due to a tolerance issue one gear is too tight and spinning when it should not be. Highly unlikely you will solve it by ECU adjustment unless you can low the revs down when cold.
Fact is for me again to resolve it you must fit a modified gear box.

My Question would be are all the gear boxes made in the same place, with the same parts, why does the issue seem to be on some cars and not others, maybe they are hoping as things wear, things will not be quite a tight.

I have to say mine is totally fine ... I am probably tempting fate now as it is only 1400 miles and 6 weeks old - but it has, to date, been perfect, cold or hot.

It will be down to certain 'batches' of transmissions/gearboxes""¦ From what I was told, the proper AMG cars are mostly put together on the same assembly line as other Mercs but are then transferred to the AMG plant to get everything else done.

I suspect that the issue is that the cars within a certain build slot have these affected gearboxes, possibly manufactured by one company/outsourcer and other batches done by others.

Merc will have contracts with these companies so shouldn't hesitate replacing them as they won't effectively lose any money, it will be the company that built the batch that will get stung as the cost will be past to them.

Hi Guys.
mine is a FL March16. Just covered 15k. Already had a new gearbox auxiliary oil pump and it now grates into reverse while on cold start and fast idle. Fuel flap solenoid issues today and could not open it. Ëś'

Noticed car is back on the drive, have Jacksons sorted it yet?

I have been in contact with MB centrally and this is not a general issue with the box. I have been told that its limited to certain boxes and was both on the Pre FL and FL meaning not an issue with the box but things sadly go wrong at times.
