Tyre "bumping" noise

I don't know how elseto describe it in the topic heading.I have now done just under 8,000 miles and my front tyres are still in good tread condition but part worn.

Every time I take the car out of the garage and on to the block paved drive the steering is usually on full lock I get a sound from the front as I creep backwards like going over small bumps in the road. The noise happens on lock in both directions. I reckon what it isare the tyres slipping on the usually damp blocks given the time of year and part worn tread so reduced grip. My concern is that it could be the foreteller of something more fundamental but I do not think it is. The wheels seem tightly attached with no uneven wear.

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any comment.

I have the same thing, I was going to mention it to dealer. It only happens when going at walking pace. I have the 19inch wheels.

Mine are the standard 18". I would be interested in the dealer's comments. I would guess you have done a few thousand miles as well. I doubt if it's anything other than tyre slip but it would be good to make sure.

Leaving my garage is a right turn and down a hill. Occasionally i hear a metalic thud during that first turn, but that's it, until the next week or so when it happens again. I have tried easing it out then into neutral to coast the turn and that seems better. I also hope its nothing serious

I have as well on slippy pavers and smooth manhole covers always seems on right lockbut maybe just coincidence.
My old Subaru Sti did it as well.
Conclusion from dealers just slip and not a rack problem- rest assured.

Good to hear this response. I also get it at crawling speeds when parking on full lock. It is Iam sure slip. Thinking it through the suspension is very stiff and at a crawl the tyre walls have no give hence the slip.

Totally normal and I have it on mine. Also had it on numerous other cars with the type of 4 wheel drive we have on the Merc. I'm sure it's the way the diff handles things.

Given the time of year when the tyres are very cold it may well be the reason, particularly when using full lock.

I had this on my previous car (370z) along with other owners, and once on the move it quickly disappeared. But if the noise continues then something for the dealer to check.

Only had my car since Friday and yet to experience it myself on the '45, but will keep an 'ear open' to see if I get the noise too.

I think you will only start toexperience it once the tread on the front tyres have worn downa bitand as you say when it is cold and also damp/wet.

Following on from this I have now checked the Continental site by number plate and they no longer make the tyre. In 18" or the19" version. But e-tyres have them available to fit.

Check the very inside edges of the tyres and see what the tread is like (you remember the pics I sent you!). MB missed mine like this on a service....

New tyres fitted todayat the frontat under 8K miles. Bumping completely gone.
The fronts were still fully legal but had the ESP light come on at the weekend when I took a right turn at about 10-15mph and it was only damp. So thought to myself why hang back changing them because they might be good for another 1,000 miles and take a risk through the bad winter weather only to change them in say March/April as the conditions improve.

Were the tyres showing any signs of uneven wear at all?

I guess 8K may not be too bad but without knowing the style of driving it's hard to comment.

Have you previously rotated fronts - backs or have you just changed the fronts this time around?

Tyres wore vey evenly.

No rotation as I wanted to change as soon as I had to for better grip.

My MPG is rarely go above 20mpg so that is probably an indicator of driving style. I drive the way the A45 was meant to be driven and save the planet by using public transport to get to work.

your on 18's are you not???

have seen the 19's very inner edge of the tyres literally going down to cord with the rest of the tyre still legal, this was missed by MB on at least 2 occasions and only really visible when on a ramp or wheels off

im waiting to get mine back (18's) to see if there is anything visible

waiting to here back on a car that had this tyre wear problem (began the skippy thread) which was discovered last night but going all round with new boots, will see if the skipping / bumping stops
