Thanks for the response I will definitely ask the dealer for extended warranty on the cylinder heads. Nice to have some anecdotal evidence to support my request.

Hi All,just an update...my car had to have the cylinder head replaced under warranty...poor communication from the dealer throughout tho,I got the car back after 2 weeks and then the coolant light kept coming on and then the engine light warning came up on the dash....it went back in and they diagnosed a problem with the inter-cooler so replaced that under warranty too,had the car back this week so see what happens next, hopefully that's the end of my problems.
Hi, I have the same issue you have had with your car, but mine is just out of warranty. I am trying to get Merc to pay the bill, do you have any evidence of your claim you could forward me please - I am trying to present to them that this is a known issue. Been quoted ÂŁ4100 for the repair amd can't afford this. Many thanks

Just been updated by the dealership. The head has been totally disassembled. Valve guide failure. So new head and valves are on the way from Germany. It arrives like a lego set and needs built so it will take another week. But on the plus side.. good communication from the dealer. They seem genuinely annoyed that it happened.. Car was only worked on by the AMG trained master tech and parts are available and being shipped urgently. All under warranty... and the a250e is an interesting courtesy car. Problem shouldn’t have happened but it’s the dealing with it that counts for me.
Hi, I have virtually the same problem with my car, trying to get Merc to pay toward the ÂŁ4100 repair as it is just out of warranty. Merc are claiming it is not a known issue, so I am trying g to gather evidence from other owners - would really appreciate any info you could give me.

I drive with the oil temp gauges on screen I noticed the oil running a bit hot. It was getting towards 111oC on a few occasions but no consumption issues. I think fuel economy had taken a bit of a hit too, but I may just have retrospect positive bias.. All was grand until the misfire.
the dealership did admit it was a common fault that MB technical are seeming now, that was something I wanted recognition of at the outset.
Hi, I am experiencing the same issues with my A250. Dealership is being difficult - which dealership were you dealing with that admitted it was a common fault (be grateful for any info as it may help me with my claim)

@BGifford please do not spam the forum with your posts - all your posts so far are very nearly identical.

Advice to you is to contact Mercedes Customer Service and say that you are having difficulties with your dealership on a common issue.

If you search this forum, other members have had to resort to this, and emailing MBUK CEO (again, search for the details).

Hi all,
I'm new to the Mercedes A Class community but have a little story for you all.
I recently purchased a 6 month old AMG A35 from a main dealer. Had a few months and have loved it up until last weekend when engine light came on. Called Merc who sent out technician. Diagnosed coil pack and fitted new. Next day having driven a few miles without issue engine light came back on and same 3 cylinder rough running engine was back. Car went in to main dealer who advised a valve problem (no further info on this yet) New head now being fitted. Anyone else had this issue?
I've just had a similar issue with my 21-plate A35. Was idling roughly / low revs (750rpm) then the engine light came on and it started misfiring very badly. Got rescued home, then it seemed to start and run more normally (although idle speed was still too low). Mercedes diagnosed a burned out valve on cylinder 2 requiring a new cylinder head. Very surprising for a car less than 2 years old and with only 13k miles on it. Now waiting an indeterminate amount of time for a new cylinder head which is apparently on back order and could take '2 days, 2 weeks or 2 months' according to MB Service team. :-( They gave me a GLA200 as a courtesy car in the meantime. It's comfy but slooooooow.

I've just come across this forum now and if I'm posting on the wrong thread, I apologise in advance. I've an 2019 A220 AMG, which I'm told needs the cylinder head to be removed and inspected. First indication of a problem was passenger Airbag warning light, followed by engine management light, which went on and off intermittently. Next was a coolant warning light and message to stop driving. Switched engine off and all lights (except Airbag and engine light). On the way to dealership, a bank of lights came (Speed limit sensor, parking camera amongst others. Stopped again and on restarting, Airbag and engine light were only lights on dash.

After 3 weeks in the garage, a change of spark plugs, compression test, (which showed very slow build up), cylinder leakage test which showed all 4 cylinders to have leakage through valves and a week of running on fuel additive, their conclusion is that cylinder head needs to be removed and inspected. They also carried out a deep clean through the intake system.

At some stage they also detected an intermittent misfire and rough tickover.

Can anyone make any sense of this sequence of events and the garage's findings please?

Thanks in advance

As you have the same engine as the A35 and A250, the M260, you likely have the same cylinder head problem. Hopefully by now the MB garage you are dealing with knows what they are doing and will cut to the chase and look to carry out the replacement work without giving you the runaround, that it could be other things.

I’ll join the list of head replacements! :( 19 plate 25k. All normal symptoms as described in forum. 2 day diagnosis, told me at least 2 weeks to sort, but based on the threads I’m expecting longer. On Euro hire car and been told by dealer they will put me in one of theirs soon as the euro car FOC period (3 days ) ends. Will keep you updated.

Was chatting to a service manager this week, he had 2 cars in the workshop awaiting heads from Germany, there’s a bit of a shortage.

So AMG have stepped in to draw the process out a bit longer, “can you check this first”,”can you test that next” - before they approve the replacement head …..

Let us know how your replacement goes, keep us updated!

This has been known about for at least two years. For AMG to step in now and slow things down is fairly useless of MB.

The extended warranty does cover it. My cylinder head was replaced on that basis. They did not make a fuss about it either, as long as the services were done at MB dealers and are on the system. And off course no obvious modifications.

Sure, makes sense. I notice in Canada they've issued an extended warranty on cylinder heads now... I wonder if MB will ever role this out across the rest of the world? They obv know the engine has issues if they've held their hands up already 🤷‍♂️
I wouldn't hold my breath on that. But an extension to 15 years on the engine, in Canada, certainly is something.
