It depends. If you have selected your region on the mercedes me portal it will be auto-updated. But you need to drive for at least 30 min or so before it begins. You can allways do a manuel download if you dont want to wait for auto-update.

Downloading it now, but it keeps failing

 

I havn't tried yet. Are you downling your own samll region or the complete package

I haven't had a notification but I successfully downloaded and installed today. No problems, but I had to update the MB Download Manager first.

I got the email but Mine is still on 292. I don't think I've ever seen it update itself

It gets the update through its built in communications module, and the e-sim. But you need good LTE reception for that to be successful, and it takes a long time, understandably.

Just do it via USB manual download.

Mercedes say in the online instructions, that it can take several months as an OTA update, which is why I have always downloaded it manually; it only takes a few minutes.

They don't use peer-to-peer for their OTA updates, so there is potentially huge overheads on their servers in sending data to all MB cars on the road. I'm guessing this is why the map updates can take so long and why they don't even attempt to push out their non-essential cosmetic updates, which are probably large files because of the graphical content.

 

I have just downloaded my map update to the latest version, it seemed strange though that I had to remove all the other stuff of my usb stick, (did save it though) is that right 🤔
Also when I went back on my pc about an hour later I had a email from MB saying I had a map update. Mmmm🤔

 

Yes, you need to remove older map versions from the drive before downloading the new version.
I also received the email shorty after download. I suspect that any activity on your account, including downloading maps - generates the email.

 

i had to do the same as the upload manager needs a blank drive, but once loaded you can put the POIs and music back on.

 

Mine is failing. First time got to 37%, and now it won't go past 2% before it pops up an error that it failed. I am doing it slightly differently so I don't know if that's the problem: I downloaded (only UK+) to a blank SD card, then copied the files over to my semi-filled thumb drive (with music and cameras). It recognises it fine, and like I said, starts the install, then ends.No idea why. I tried with a fresh download and a different socket (both under the armrest) but the same issue.

 

When I loaded. It took a while. Stalled at 30%!for a few mins and other times until finally finishing. Just leave it a while.

 

It stalled for a long time every time and I did leave it, but then it ended each time with a popup message that it had failed.

 

I would use a pen drive that has nothing else on it. I've never had one fail using that method, and I've probably done five or six since I've had the car.

 

What's new with this update?

 

I spotted a traffic lights icon which I hadn't noticed before. Otherwise, who knows?

 

It's a map update. So I'd guess it's roads and suchlike

 

So, weird. Yesterday I did the following:

1) downloaded the update to an empty SD card in my PC (which is annoying because a) it won't let you download to the hard drive, and b) no reason why it makes you download to an empty drive, so I had to move all the stuff off of it temporarily)
2) I only have one USB thumb drive, which has all of my music, and the speed cameras, so I didn't want to empty it. Instead, I copied over the downloaded files from the SD card to the USB drive
3) The car recognised that the update files were available. First time it got to 37%, then after a long pause, popped up an error message that the update had failed. I tried again and it got to 1%, long pause, pop-up message, tried again, got to 2% then same thing, and two more times, same thing.
4) After doing absolutely nothing (the car was parked overnight), I tried again today, and it worked! It took a while, with a very long pause at 39%, but this time it continued on to completion.

 

I've put all the 14.1 map updates on a memory stick, I just wondered how long the car takes to do the updates and does the ignition need to be on the whole time or will it stop & start as you use the car until they are all loaded?

 

It will pause and resume as you park or use the car.

 

Thanks @veeeight , I just found this out myself whilst sitting in Sainsbury's carpark. If you go to Settings Software update you can see how far the update has progressed. Mine was on 65% when I found this 🙄 then it suddenly jumped to Finished.

Just for interest I plugged in a second usb with the maps on and although the car still showed my music on my first usb the Personal POIs were missing until I pulled the second usb
